View ProgramRise in the Teacher Certification Ranks at AUM
The Alabama State Department of Education sets strict certification standards for new and experienced teachers alike. As a result, aspiring educators need more than a teaching degree to begin or advance their careers. Here are the three unconditional certifications with examples of degrees that allow teachers in Alabama to reach the next level:
To attain the initial professional educator certificate in Alabama, novice teachers must first earn their bachelor’s degree in a teaching field. Additional requirements for Class B certification include the completion of an internship, satisfactory scores on the Praxis II and edTPA exams, and a minimum 2.5 GPA in an undergraduate teaching program.
Earning a master’s degree in education online extends your proficiency as a teacher. You’ll also be ready to acquire Class A certification, which affirms your mastery of education concepts. AUM offers paths to Class A certification through alternative and traditional master’s programs, with online degrees in elementary education, instructional leadership, kinesiology, secondary education, and special education.
If you already earned your master’s degree and Class A certification, you can advance to the next teacher certification rank by acquiring your Education Specialist degree. AUM’s online education degrees align with the Class AA certification requirements for careers in counseling, elementary education, instructional leadership, and special education.
Do you plan to work in schools outside of Alabama? The certification requirements vary by state, so be sure to look into the process for the location where you plan to teach.
