Covers general concepts of strategic planning for business development and marketing as applied to health care settings. Potential conflicts between an organization’s business objectives and its participation with competitors in collaborative community benefit programs are also explored.

This Special Topics course explores emerging trends and complex issues in healthcare management. Students will engage with cutting-edge topics, including innovative healthcare technologies, policy changes, and leadership strategies. Through case studies, guest lectures, and projects, students will develop practical skills and insights to address the evolving challenges in the healthcare industry.

This course is an introduction to the use of Business Analytics and big data as a strategic resource. A focus is placed on integrating the knowledge of analytics tools with an understanding of how companies leverage data analytics to gain strategic advantage. The key areas of customer analytics and surveys of data mining techniques and applications will also be covered. Case approach is used to emphasize hands-on learning and a real-world view of Business and big data analytics.

This course covers finance concepts and models of for-profit and not-for-profit healthcare entities. Students will analyze financial data including profit or loss, ratios, overhead, and allocations. Other topics include third-party payers, applications of time value of money, and planning for capital needs. Prerequisites: ECON 5550 and ACCT 6220

This course introduces graduate students to human resource management in healthcare organizations, focusing on essential managerial skills. Students will learn about key topics such as strategic HR management, workforce planning, the legal environment, diversity, job analysis and design, recruitment, selection and retention, organizational development, compensation and benefits, health and safety preparedness, and employee/labor relations.

This capstone course involves a project from program start to finish, culminating in a capstone presentation. Students will identify and solve workplace problems. If not employed in a healthcare-related role, students will receive an internship at a healthcare facility or with MHA faculty to apply their learning. Options for an independent project or thesis paper are available with Program Director approval.

This course will investigate how legal and regulatory compliance helps shape the healthcare environment in the United States. A brief explanation of the legal system is covered. Students will explore how legal responsibility may be at odds with individual ethical norms, and how to possibly reconcile such conflicts. We will focus on patient privacy laws and the requirements of electronic health records.

Provide students with an overview of the U.S. health care system, its components, and the current policy challenges. Topics include status of health reform and the role of state and federal levels and to the budgetary implications of health care spending, major health policy institutions and important issues that cut across institutions, including private insurers and the federal/state financing programs (Medicare and Medicaid/SCHIP). One of the major challenges for healthcare leaders is ensuring that every patient receives high quality care, all of the time. The overall aim of this course is to learn how to improve healthcare quality by applying integrated systems to identify opportunities and implement change. In addition, students will also examine how to create an environment that fosters learning and innovation. Prerequisite; Graduate standing and INFO 5880
