The BSW online courses are accredited by the CSWE and rooted in a liberal arts foundation, ensuring you will be able to think critically about social work from all perspectives. You will join a cohort of eight to twelve like-minded students and work alongside mentoring faculty to develop practical social work expertise.

Through a strategic blend of career-ready coursework and applied practice assignments, you will master the nine core competencies required of highly qualified social workers. When you’re ready to graduate, you will be prepared to sit for the Licensed Baccalaureate Social Work (LBSW) exam, which is required for many licensed social work roles.

Transfer CreditsTransfer credits for the major will be considered if they are from a CSWE-accredited program. If approved by the AUM Bachelor of Social Work program director, students may transfer up to 50% of the credit requirements from a two-year program or up to 75% from a four-year program.   • Social Work Standards Form
  • One letter of recommendation from someone who knows you well, such as professors, social workers, work supervisors, or social service agency personnel. Note: AUM social work faculty (full time or adjunct) cannot write your recommendation letter for admission into the program.
  • A three- to four-page original essay in which you discuss the following: reasons you believe social work is an appropriate career choice for you given your personal values, life experiences, and ability to contribute to the profession; your history of helping others, or personal events which have contributed to your growth in awareness, sensitivity, and understanding of diversity with regard to race, age, gender, lifestyle, class, culture, political ideology, immigration status, sexual orientation and gender identity, spirituality, or physical or intellectual ability; your personal values as they relate to the profession of social work values; your strengths and areas of growth as it relates to becoming a social work professional. Also, review the NASW Code of Ethics. If there is a conflict with the profession’s values, discuss how you will resolve those conflicts. This essay should not be from a previous class.
Additional InformationAdmission to the BSW online degree program is a two-step process. Students will begin as a pre-social work major. After completing most of the pre-social work courses at AUM or another institution, students must apply for admission to the social work program. This application is separate from the general university application and completion of AUM’s pre-social work degree plan (or one from another institution). It does not guarantee acceptance. Students must have a C+ or above in all social work core courses.

Dr. Angie Smith, Assistant Professor

Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Angie Smith

Dr. Angie Smith is a first-generation college graduate who earned both a Master of Social Work and Ph.D. from The University of Alabama. Her doctoral dissertation explored the lived experiences of Black college students following encounters with police violence. Her current research focuses on social work education, particularly the importance of evidence-based practice in research for undergraduate students.
