The online Master of Education in Instructional Leadership includes 10 courses. Each term lasts 16 weeks, and you can complete the program in one year. Auburn University at Montgomery designed the curriculum to prepare aspiring educators for administration careers that focus on enhancing instruction, improving student outcomes, and leading other teachers. The program also provides qualifications for attaining Class A certification in Alabama.
You can work with your advisor to choose three elective courses, customizing your MEd in Instructional Leadership degree to your goals. In addition to the online courses, you’ll complete a residency to gain hands-on experience and mentorship that positions you for advancement in education supervision and instructional leadership.

This course is designed to orient the instructional leadership candidate to the expectations and requirements of the instructional leadership program. Course content includes the residency and mentoring components of the program, as well as other program requirements for certification by the State Department of Education. In addition, it will cover PRAXIS Test requirements for Instructional Leadership Certification and Live Text Portfolio Assessments and Evaluations.
This course discusses instructional leaders’ responsibility to establish teaching and learning as the focal point for schools. Examines the proposition that student learning is the fundamental purpose of school.
Prerequisite: Departmental approval.
The purpose of this course is to develop the leadership knowledge and ability of prospective instructional leaders in the study of planning for continuous improvement. Emphasis is on the potential instructional leader’s responsibility for creating and articulating a shared vision of high expectations for learning within the school or district that fosters a culture of continuous improvement.
Prerequisite: Departmental approval.
This course addresses instructional leaders’ responsibility to enhance student learning through effective, efficient and equitable utilization of resources. Effective management of the organization, facilities and appropriate collaboration to create a safe and effective learning environment are examined.

This course provides the Instructional Leadership candidate with the working knowledge of human resources, including recruitment, selection and induction of employees, effective professional development and personnel planning for instructional improvement.

This course addresses effective leadership for technology in schools. The assumption is that instructional leaders should recognize the potential of technology and be competent users of information and technology tools and utilizing practical technology applications.
Prerequisite: Departmental approval.
This course provides student with a comprehensive understanding of legal principles, ethics and diversity. Each instructional leadership candidate will develop a working knowledge of legal principles, including significant landmark cases, tort law and specific Alabama laws. Students develop a personal code of ethics using the Alabama Educator Code of Ethics. Also focuses on equal opportunity and diversity issues.

Internship and Praxis
Credits
Provides prospective instructional leaders opportunities to demonstrate ability to perform responsibilities and tasks of school leaders. Plans for supervised experiences in a school setting developed cooperatively by faculty members, experienced administrators and interns.

Take final semester; requires passing Praxis II score and completion of portfolio
