How to Start AUM’s Medical Laboratory Science Program

Program Outcomes
We designed the online Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science program to prepare students to enter the clinical laboratory science profession and continue to learn during their careers. After earning your bachelor’s degree, you’ll have a variety of medical laboratory science competencies, including those required to perform testing procedures, evaluate test results, and process lab data.
What You’ll Learn
- Explain the functions of each of the human body systems
- Correlate the physiologic functions of the human body with laboratory assessment of each
- Integrate patient data for evaluation of the validity of laboratory test results
- Recognize a problem or discrepancy in test results, identify the cause, and determine what action should be taken to correct the problem
- Apply computer technology in clinical laboratory data processing, data reporting, and information retrieval
- Perform all collection and testing procedures of blood and body fluids with the highest degree of proficiency
- Follow established procedures/directions in the process of performing routine and complex laboratory testing
- Evaluate quality control and quality assurance assessments
- Implement corrective action to maintain accuracy and precision in laboratory testing
- Perform preventive/corrective maintenance of laboratory instruments

Kathryn Dugan
Faculty Spotlight: Kathryn Dugan
Kathryn Dugan is the department chair and program director for the AUM Medical and Clinical Laboratory Sciences department. She is also a tenured assistant professor at AUM.
Dugan completed her bachelor’s degree in biology with an emphasis in medical technology and her master’s degree in education with an emphasis in biology from AUM. She is an ASCP board-certified Medical Laboratory Scientist and a member of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science. She teaches the Clinical Chemistry series and Lab Management and Education in the online program.
